SUMMARY:Inspired Creations\, Art We Enjoy
DESCRIPTION:The Poeh Cultural Center Presents: Inspired Creations\, Art We Enjoy  \nOctober 14\, 2022 – January 6\, 2023.  \nOpening Reception October 14\, 2022\, from 4 pm -5 pm  \nPUEBLO OF POJOAQUE\, NM — The Poeh Cultural Center is jumping into autumn with Inspired Creations\, Art We Enjoy\, which will run from October 14\, 2022\, through January 6\, 2023. This exhibition features works from Poeh’s permanent collection and were selected by the Poeh Cultural Center’s staff. \nThe staff chose the artworks for various reasons\, but for some\, it was personal. “I chose a traditional seed pot created by my Mother Virginia Gutierrez of Nambe Pueblo\,” said Macario Guiterrez\, a Pojoaque Tribal Member and Poeh’s Development Director. “Some of my fondest memories as a young child was my mother working with her clay and planting the family garden. The comforting sounds of my mom whispering to her clay creation and humming and singing traditional Tewa songs as I tried to mimic her. I think that is why she was partial to making seed pots. She knew the importance of what this vessel represented. This seed jar would have been used to store harvested seeds for the next planting season.” \nInspired Creations\, Art We Enjoy is an opportunity to view art through an Indigenous interpretation and analysis. Of the 19 staff members\, some have been employees with the Poeh since the construction of the facilities in the 2000s. The staff represent diverse backgrounds\, interests\, and cultures and are also artists\, musicians\, and tribal officials. Essentially\, this exhibit hopes to answer the question\, “Who gets to talk about art?” \n“It reminded me of a family affair as we made our choices\, picked the works\, and described how they resonated with us\,” said Stephen Fadden\, Poeh’s Programming Director. “We’re from so many different backgrounds\, but it still felt like we’re all related.” \nThis collaboration of the Poeh staff provides an opportunity to breathe new life into the collection\, idea-sharing\, learning\, and show pride in Poeh’s multi-decade efforts in the preservation and celebration of Tewa culture. \nAn opening reception will be held on Friday\, October 14\, 2022\, with refreshments served from 4 pm to 5 pm. Face masks are optional but are encouraged for guests. \nFor more information\, contact the Poeh Cultural Center at 505-455-5041. \nABOUT THE POEH   Founded in 1988\, the Pueblo of Pojoaque established the Poeh Cultural Center as the first permanent tribally owned and operated mechanism for cultural preservation and revitalization within the Pueblo communities of the northern Rio Grande Valley. The Poeh has since become a resource for Pueblo people to learn the arts and culture of their ancestors. The facility resembles a traditional Pueblo village with its adjacent art studio buildings and outdoor gathering areas. The Center emphasizes the arts and cultures of all Pueblo People\, focusing on the Tewa-speaking Pueblos of Pojoaque\, San Ildefonso\, Ohkay Owingeh\, Santa Clara\, Tesuque\, and Nambé. \nMedia Contact: \nCougar Vigil   Outreach Coordinator505.455.5061   cvigil@pojoaque.org    \nSOURCE The Poeh Cultural Center \n###

SUMMARY:Di Wae Powa: Opening Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Tewa Pottery Advisory Committee and Poeh Cultural Center invite you to join us at the public opening reception for DI WAE POWA and welcome our pottery home. After a century long journey\, Tewa Pueblo pottery acquired within the Tewa villages is returning back to Tewa hands. These pots\, along with a research gallery\, are a ground breaking co-stewardship between the Poeh Cultural Center and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.\n\n\n \n\n\nSATURDAY\, OCTOBER 12\, 2019\n\n\n11 AM – 4 PM\n\n\nOpening Reception will include traditional Pueblo food\, dances\, speakers & pottery demonstrations.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe Poeh Cultural Center at the Pueblo of Pojoaque\, has finalized an agreement with the National Museum of the American Indian to open a groundbreaking new exhibition and research space that will feature 100 pots of Tewa origin at the Poeh. The exhibition\, titled Di Wae Powa: They Came Back\, is an historic partnership for both the Poeh and NMAI\, because it involves a long-term co-stewardship and display of Tewa pottery that were collected from Tewa Pueblo potters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And now\, those same pots will return home and be reunited with the descendants of their creators. The public exhibit opening is set for October 12 and will include Tewa Pueblo dances\, foods\, speakers and pottery demonstrations.\n\n\nTo learn more about this project please follow the link here:

SUMMARY:Jacob Viarrial Community Day
DESCRIPTION:The Poeh Cultural Center invites you to join us on June 28\, 2019 from 10 AM to 1 PM to celebrate Jake Viarrial Day (1946-2004). Viarrial\, who served 2 terms as the Governor of Pojoaque\, was a vocal advocate for Pueblo legal rights and sovereignty. His assertion of Pueblo sovereignty garnered national attention in 1995 when he challenged the state of New Mexico’s decision to force the Pueblo of Pojoaque to close its casino. Viarrial threatened to install tollbooths along U.S. 84-285 to make up for lost revenue if the state closed the casino. The state backed down.\n\nSenator Nancy Rodriguez (D) District 24\, who was a close personal friend of “Uncle Jake”\, will be on hand to help celebrate the event which will include stories\, music\, food\, and children’s activities.\n\nFor more information contact Macario Gutierrez at 505.455.5043 or magutierrez@pojoaque.org

SUMMARY:10th Annual Dia de Los Muertos Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The 10th Annual Dia de Los Muertos exhibit will open October 26th at the Poeh Cultural Center. \nThe exhibit\, which will feature the works of 21 established New Mexico Hispanic and Native American artists\, as well the works of youth and emerging artists. Their work celebrates the rich artistic and spiritual traditions as expressed in jewelry\, painting\, sculpture and photography. \n  \nCara Romero\, a photographer\, described how the exhibit celebrates the intercultural connections of peoples in the Southwest. “Many of us (Natives from the Southwest) have grandparents that were listed as Mexican citizens. Many of our tribal languages from north and south of the border are the same\,” Romero said. “The songs\, the art\, the dependence on the very same lands and waters.  Our parrot bundles come from there\, our shells and the shared culture of Dia de los Muertos reminds us that we were once the same peoples.” \n  \nThis year marks the 10th Annual occasion for the show. “The reason I started the show was to showcase some local young and upcoming artists mainly to give back and remember the ones we have lost in our families\, and to bring back the festival into New Mexico culture.” said Toby Morfin\, one of the organizers and artists featured in the exhibit. \n  \nThe opening reception for the exhibit will be held October 26th\, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the Poeh Cultural Center in Pojoaque. \nFeatured Artists:\nJason Borrego\nVince Campos\nDio Dominguez\nMatthew Duran\nJoshua I.
