Jacob Viarrial Community Day

June 28 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

- Free

The Poeh Cultural Center invites you to join us on June 28, 2019 from 10 AM to 1 PM to celebrate Jake Viarrial Day (1946-2004). Viarrial, who served 2 terms as the Governor of Pojoaque, was a vocal advocate for Pueblo legal rights and sovereignty. His assertion of Pueblo sovereignty garnered national attention in 1995 when he challenged the state of New Mexico’s decision to force the Pueblo of Pojoaque to close its casino. Viarrial threatened to install tollbooths along U.S. 84-285 to make up for lost revenue if the state closed the casino. The state backed down.

Senator Nancy Rodriguez (D) District 24, who was a close personal friend of “Uncle Jake”, will be on hand to help celebrate the event which will include stories, music, food, and children’s activities.
